Operation Iron Ruck (OIR) is committed to serving veterans throughout the wider veteran community. One of the ways ASVA extends its impact is by supporting other veteran-focused nonprofits across the state of Alabama, helping ensure that veterans have access to the basic resources they need. Among the organizations OIR supports is Three Hots and a Cot, a Birmingham-based nonprofit dedicated to helping veterans transition back into civilian life through housing, rehabilitation and other support services.

The organization began in March 2010 with the purchase of a six-bedroom home in Birmingham’s Woodlawn neighborhood. Today, Three Hots and a Cot operates four homes, two transitional and two independent living facilities, designed to provide veterans with housing and a path toward independence.

Since officially launching in November 2010, the program has supported more than 1,788 veterans and their family members. Of those, 1,436 have successfully moved into independent housing, reunited with their families or entered other VA programs. Currently, 28 individuals reside in transitional homes, while 12 veterans and their families live in independent homes managed by the organization. Overall, Three Hots and a Cot has achieved an impressive 83.5% success rate.

The organization offers a wide range of services tailored to each veteran’s needs. Some may simply need immediate assistance, like a shower or clothing, while others require long-term support to rebuild stability. Services include housing, meals, showers, laundry facilities, transportation, job-search assistance, group support meetings and 24/7 on-site staff—all focused on helping veterans achieve full rehabilitation and self-sufficiency.

Three Hots and a Cot relies on the generosity of the community. They are always in need of groceries, paper products, cleaning supplies, hygiene items, monetary donations and volunteers. To learn how you can support this organization, visit cotsforvets.org/contact or call (205) 520-2356.
